The Geographies of American Slavery: A Digital Mapping Project
Bill Rankin (Yale University)
Data is often collected by jurisdiction, but the sharp lines of states, counties, and municipalities rarely align with the geographies we actually care about. The history of American slavery offers several opportunities for new cartographic techniques that challenge longstanding mapping conventions. This talk will connect the nitty gritty of map design, GIS, and javascript with broad arguments about the regional geography of slaveholding.
