Mellon Seminar: Steve McLaughlin
September 23, 2024 - 12:00pm
Williams 623
Steve will discuss how his background in poetry, programming, and teaching led him to start Iffy Books, a bookshop/workshop space focused on building community among activists and technology enthusiasts. He'll recount some successful projects from the past three years, such as a workshop on hacking e-waste routers and an ongoing effort to build a mesh chat network across Philly. And he'll address the challenges of running an idealistic community space without institutional support.
Steve McLaughlin is a bookseller at Iffy Books, located at 404 S. 20th St., PHL. He runs workshops on DIY skills for privacy, activism, and expanding the commons. You can find a series of how-to zines he's written to at iffybooks.net/zines.
