Elliot Montpellier

Ph.D. candidate, Department of Anthropology and Department of South Asia Studies, University of Pennsylvania

Elliot Montpellier is interested in mediatized discourse about Islam, piety, and morality in Pakistani media productions, specifically television drama serials. He is a dual-degree PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology and the Department of South Asia Studies. He examines the interplay of media production, reception and the Internet in shaping pious publics in (and beyond) South Asia. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Karachi, Pakistan and Surrey, Canada, more recently drawing on remote and digital ethnographic methods. His research facilitates both computational ‘distant’ viewing and traditional, ethnographically descriptive approaches to broadcast and social media, towards a better understanding of processes of dialogic encounters between audiences and producers.
